Target: Democratic and Republican Electoral College Voters
Goal: Unite to elect a dignified and qualified Republican president who is not Donald Trump.
Donald Trump is a lying demagogue who has demonstrated himself to be unfit for the highest office in the land, and yet he is set to become the president-elect on December 19 when the Electoral College votes. Hillary Clinton is a secretive political insider whose public approval ratings were near record lows, and yet she won the popular vote by over 2 million people and still managed to lose the election. Neither of these candidates should be elected to the presidency, and there is a very real way to stop that from happening, but only if patriotic Americans are willing to put their country and their fellow citizens ahead of partisan politics.
First, Democrats must concede that their party lost the election fair and square and recognize that a Republican will, and should be the next president. Love or hate the disproportionate nature of the Electoral College, it is the law of the land, and we are a land of laws. By throwing their support behind a qualified and dignified Republican like Mitt Romney for the presidency, Democrats can demonstrate their love of country over love of party, and will open the door for Republicans to do the same.
Second, Republicans must recognize that Donald Trump is an existential threat to our democracy, our republic and world peace. If Trump was currently president, he would have already violated Article 1, Section 6, Clause 2 of the United States Constitution, also known as the “Emoluments Clause,” due to his pursuit of personal financial gain from foreign leaders and state run companies. Trump was enthusiastically supported in his campaign by the Russian secret police and encouraged them to hack his political opponent’s computer, his top adviser is a Soviet Leninist, and his national security adviser re-tweets fake news stories created by foreign spammers. By opposing Trump’s Electoral College vote for these reasons, Republicans can demonstrate the type of patriotism and genuine concern for America’s best interests that the entire country has been desperately seeking.
As for the procedure required to stop Trump, it is written right into the Constitution and is designed for situations just like the one we face. To become president, a candidate must receive 270 votes when the Electoral College meets on Dec. 19. In Federalist Paper 68, Alexander Hamilton argued that the Electoral College should determine if candidates are qualified, not engaged in demagogy, and independent from foreign influence. This principle is ingrained in our Constitution and should be used to soundly reject Trump’s ignorance, demagogy and foreign influence and corruption.
Unfortunately, even if Trump fails to receive the 270 required votes, that simply sends the vote to the House of Representatives, where Trump will likely be elected. However, if all Democratic electors pledge to vote for a single Republican who is not Trump, that means only 38 Republican electors would need to join them, in order to officially elect that person to the presidency. So, for example, if Hillary Clinton asked her electors to vote as a block for Mitt Romney, and only 38 Republicans joined them, then Romney would become the next president of the United States and our country would be sparred the ignorance, hatred and foreign corruption of a Trump reign.
If this is going to work, we have a lot of work to do, and a short time to do it. Many feel that they already lost. However, the election is not done. The New York Post reports, “According to the Constitution, chosen electors of the Electoral College are the real people who will vote for president when they meet on Dec. 19 in their respective state capitals." This means there is still a possibility for justice. The representatives CAN change the future of the country, and it is their duty to do so. Therefore, we, the American people, are formally asking the Electoral College representatives for the state of Texas to stand in unity with the will and safety of the public and elect Hillary Clinton as the 45th president of the United States on December 19th.
Being that I am a resident of the state of Texas, I’ve created this petition for the Electoral College representatives of this state. The Founding Fathers’ primary purpose in creating the Electoral College was to ensure that informed judgement in the best interests of the country prevailed over public sentiment in the election of the President. As James Madison reflected after the fact:
“A small number of persons, selected by their fellow-citizens from the general mass, will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated investigations. It was also peculiarly desirable to afford as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder… the precautions which have been so happily concerted in the [Electoral College], promise an effectual security against this mischief.”
In plain, modern language, Madison says the Electoral College was created so that if a person won the popular vote due to the frustrations, animosities, and ignorance of the general population, informed, discerning, disciplined people wanting the best for our country would prevail, and protect the nation from a President who would likely do great harm to the nation.
As such, 2016 is the first time in our history that the mission of the Electoral College begs to be fulfilled. This is not a matter of politics as usual, or symbolic protests. In some States, Electors are free to vote their conscience. In some, they may be (modestly) punished for voting against the State’s own popular vote. In either case, the very reason Electors exist is so that they may countermand presidential election results at a time such as the present. This is why you are an Elector. When you are convened, we pray you will have the courage and the integrity to take the important historic action with which you are charged.
For your convenience, a list of only some of Donald J. Trumps documented disqualifications to hold this most special office is provided below. We the undersigned beg all Electors who care for and love this country to vote for Hillary Clinton, or to at least not vote for Donald Trump, whatever the cost.

- Donald Trump proposed that China should assassinate Kim-Jong Un.
- Donald Trump has praised the actions taken by China in Tiananmen Square, by Vladimir Putin in Ukraine, and by dictators Kim Jong-Un, and Saddam Hussein.
- Donald Trump has done business with and taken as advisors a number of persons recognized for their relationship to organized crime or to Vladimir Putin. He also tried to do business with Muammar Qaddafi.
- Donald Trump has said the United States should not honor treaties on which it is a signatory, which would entirely undermine our international credibility.

But according to the latest numbers, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by more than 2.6 million.
In other words, we have a similar situation as in 2000—where the candidate who more voters picked did not become president. It is unfair, undemocratic, and long past time that we start electing our presidents by national popular vote.
Electing the president by national popular vote. does not even require a constitutional amendment. An effort known as The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is an agreement among several U.S. states and the District of Columbia to award all their respective electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote. Once states totaling 270 electoral votes join the compact--which only requires passing state laws-- then the next presidential election will be determined the the popular vote, not the Electoral College.
As of November 9, 2016, ten states and the District of Columbia have signed the compact, totaling 165 electoral votes. So, we are already over 60% of the way there. If we can make this a national issue now, and if Democrats can do well at the state level in the 2018 midterm elections (which could happen under President Trump), then the winner of 2020 presidential election will be determined by popular vote.

Most people believe there is nothing that can be done to stop Trump from becoming president, but there is one last chance. The electors of the Electoral College can vote against Trump and award their votes to Hillary Clinton. The majority of Americans voted for Hillary Clinton and she should be our president. Republicans stole the election from Al Gore in 2000 in the same fashion and there was no change. America should always be a place where the people are the deciding factor on who leads our nation, not a system that can be manipulated for one candidate to win, even when they did not win the popular vote.
America has changed the constitution and its rules along the way to become more progressive and just. An argument will be made that our constitution says this is how we elect leaders. Our constitution also denied women the right to vote, and enslaved black people, we changed that. We saw the error of our ways and adjusted to make our nation a more perfect union. We cannot be a more perfect union if we continue to elect people through a flawed system that allows the winner of the popular vote to yet again not become president.
